Abstract
El cáncer cervical es una preocupación significativa en el ámbito de salud pública a nivel internacional, debido a su alta frecuencia y tasa de mortalidad entre las mujeres. La prueba del Papanicolau conocida también como citología cervical, constituye un recurso fundamental para la identificación temprana de alteraciones celulares que pueden indicar la presencia de lesiones precancerosas o cáncer en sus etapas iniciales. A pesar de su importancia, el grado de conocimiento sobre esta prueba y su función en la identificación del cáncer cervical varía ampliamente entre la población femenina de diferentes contextos. Esta variabilidad afecta directamente la participación en los programas de detección y, en consecuencia, los resultados de salud. Esta tesis se enfoca en evaluar el grado de comprensión sobre la relevancia del Papanicolau entre mujeres de diversas edades y antecedentes. Para lograr este objetivo, se empleará un enfoque metrológico cuantitativo mediante la administración de encuestas estructuradas a una muestra representativa de mujeres en la comunidad seleccionada. Los datos recolectados permitirán identificar las principales barreras y facilitadores relacionados con la realización de la prueba, así como evaluar el impacto de variables sociodemográficas. Los hallazgos de esta investigación ofrecen datos cruciales para diseñar estrategias educativas y campañas de sensibilización destinadas a aumentar la comprensión y aceptación del test de Papanicolau. Promover una mejor comprensión de esta prueba es crucial para impulsar la detección precoz, reducir la prevalencia del cáncer cervical y optimizar los resultados de salud. Además, se elabora un manual con la información esencial sobre el Papanicolaou dirigido al género femenino que reciben atención en el centro Asociación Damas Salesianas, como parte del resultado final.

1. Topic: Level of knowledge on the Importance of the Pap smear with women of the Salesian
Ladies Association April-June 2024 Cuenca-Ecuador
2. Problem: Lack of access to health centers is an important point to discuss since this is
where quality information about the Pap test can be acquired.
3. Objective: To train on the importance of the Pap smear for women who attend outpatient
consultations in the Salesian Ladies Association.
4. Methodology: qualitative, analytical and cross-sectional, where we worked with 39
surveys and for data tabulation we used Google Form
5. New /Findings: The integration of public health programs that include informative
talks, workshops, and the use of mass communication channels could increase the level of
awareness and, consequently, the willingness of women to undergo this test regularly.
6. Results: 72% of the people surveyed have heard about the Pap test while 28% have not
heard or do not remember having heard about the test. Likewise, according to the results
of the surveys, 72% of people know why it is important to have the Pap test, in order to
identify abnormalities in the cervix, infections and the human papillomavirus. This answer
reflects a proper and accurate understanding of the primary purpose of this test.
The 85% believe that the exam should be performed after starting sexual intercourse, while
15% mention other reasons such as discomfort in the vagina.
7. Conclusions: The study carried out on the degree of understanding about the relevance of
the Pap smear offers valuable data to understand the perception and attitude of the
population towards this essential test for early detection of cervical cancer.
However, factors such as lack of adequate information, fear, shame and misinformation
were identified, which negatively influence adherence to medical recommendations.
Likewise, a connection between academic training and the possibility of taking the exam
was observed, highlighting the need for more effective and accessible health education
campaigns for the entire population.
